Short answer. Donor egg IVF in India runs through a registered ART Bank and a registered ART clinic. The law requires written informed consent from everyone involved (Act s.22(1)(a); Rules r.13), 12 months of insurance for the donor, bought by the commissioning couple or woman (Act s.22(1)(b); Rules r.12), and one donor for one couple only (Act s.27(3)). The clinic gives you its exact document list and schedule.

Donor egg IVF in India: the steps in order

In outline, the process looks like this:

  1. Consultation with the clinic team.
  2. Documents and registration with the ART Bank.
  3. Donor matching through the bank.
  4. Consents and donor insurance.
  5. Egg retrieval at a registered ART clinic, then your treatment.

The bank and clinic set the exact order and the dates for your case. Parents abroad can read how this works on our International Patients page.

Who gives consent

Written informed consent is required from all parties (Act s.22(1)(a); Rules r.13). The egg donor gives hers in Form 13. She also gives up all parental rights, and the child is the legal child of the commissioning couple (Act s.31). The bank also takes a written confidentiality undertaking from the donor (Act s.27(6); Rules r.15).

Insurance for the donor

The commissioning couple or woman buys a 12 month insurance policy for the egg donor from an IRDA recognised insurer. It must cover complications of egg retrieval (Act s.22(1)(b); Rules r.12). The donor does not pay for it. Our post Are egg donors paid in India? explains this further.

Documents the clinic will ask for

The clinic will tell you which documents it needs. Expect it to ask for identity documents and your recent fertility reports. Couples may also be asked for proof of marriage. The list can differ for families abroad, so wait for the clinic’s own list before you collect anything. We do not publish a fixed list here because the law does not set one for parents.

Where retrieval happens

The ART Bank screens and registers the donor. It does not stimulate her or retrieve her eggs. Stimulation and retrieval take place at a registered ART clinic, and surgical retrieval at a Level 2 clinic (Rules r.3(1)(ii), r.13(1)(c)).

How long does it take?

The time depends on matching, the donor’s cycle and your own treatment plan. The clinic will give you a schedule once you register. We do not promise a fixed timeline.

One donor, one couple

A bank cannot supply the same donor to more than one commissioning couple (Act s.27(3)). Your donor is matched to you alone. Details of the couple, the woman and the donor stay confidential (Act s.21(e)).
